Satara State

1818 – 1848
PrincipalityAsia

The Chhatrapati's rump raj: after the Third Anglo-Maratha War destroyed the Peshwa's dominions in 1818, the British freed Shivaji's titular descendant from Peshwa control and handed him a principality around Satara, which they resumed in 1848 when the last raja died without a natural heir.

Annexed to British India (Bombay Presidency) under the Doctrine of Lapse after Shahaji III died heirless in 1848.
