The last pre-Islamic Iranian empire, the Sasanian state revived Zoroastrian Persian kingship and rivaled Rome and Byzantium for four centuries before falling to the Arab-Muslim conquests.

Conquered by the Rashidun Caliphate through a series of Arab Muslim invasions culminating in 651 CE, when the last Sasanian emperor Yazdegerd III was murdered near Merv, ending the dynasty.
