San José Mogote

1500 BC – 500 BC
ChiefdomNorth America

The dominant Zapotec chiefdom of the Etla Valley of Oaxaca during the Formative period, antecedent to Monte Albán and the site of Mexico's earliest known Zapotec hieroglyphic writing.

Collapsed as the dominant Zapotec chiefdom around 500 BCE following intense Rosario-phase warfare, its elite population joining in the founding of Monte Albán through synoikism, ending San José Mogote's independent regional authority.
