Industrial Saar coalfield detached from Germany by the Treaty of Versailles and governed 1920-1935 under a League of Nations mandate, with France holding the mines. Capital Saarbruecken; population ~812,000 (1933).

In the plebiscite of 13 January 1935, 90.8% voted for reunion with Germany; the League Council resolved the return on 17 January and the territory rejoined the Reich on 1 March 1935.
