Spanish audiencia established 1559 at Ciudad de la Plata de Nuevo Toledo (modern Sucre), with jurisdiction over the Governorate of Charcas, Paraguay, and the Governorate of the Río de la Plata (now Uruguay and northern Argentina) at its broadest extent; oversaw the immense silver output of the Potosí mines.
Transferred from the Viceroyalty of Peru to the newly created Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata in 1776; abolished with independence in 1825.
