The Vogtland lordships of the House of Reuss, descended from imperial bailiffs of Gera and Weida, divided in 1564 into the lines that endured; imperial counts from 1673 and princes from 1778/1806, they survived as two of the smallest federal states of the German Empire.
Both principalities became republics in November 1918, merged as the People's State of Reuss in 1919, and joined the new State of Thuringia in 1920.
