La Serenissima, the world's most durable merchant republic, dominated Adriatic and eastern Mediterranean trade for over a millennium before Napoleon dissolved it in 1797.

Abolished on 12 May 1797 when the last Doge Ludovico Manin dissolved the republic under Napoleon's threat; its territory was then partitioned between France and Austria by the Treaty of Campo Formio.
