The settler-led government that followed the January 1893 overthrow of Queen Liliʻuokalani — a Provisional Government, then from 4 July 1894 a republic under Sanford B. Dole, run by the annexationist white planter elite over native Hawaiian opposition.
Annexed by the United States through the Newlands Resolution in July 1898 after the Spanish-American War made Pearl Harbor strategic; became the Territory of Hawaii in 1900.
