1005 – 1797
RepublicEurope

A powerful maritime republic that rivalled Venice for Mediterranean trade supremacy, establishing colonies across the Black Sea and North Africa before Napoleon absorbed it in 1797.

Overthrown on 14 June 1797 by Genoese Jacobins aided by French forces, who replaced it with the French client Ligurian Republic; Genoa was annexed by France itself in 1805.
