The Tuscan city-state that became the cradle of the Italian Renaissance, governed as a commune and intermittently by the Medici family before becoming the Duchy of Florence in 1532.

Abolished on 27 April 1532 when Pope Clement VII dissolved its republican constitution and created a hereditary Duchy of Florence under Alessandro de' Medici.
