One of the strongest Caucasus khanates, on the north-eastern Caspian slope, which under Fatali Khan briefly dominated its neighbours (Baku, Derbent, Shirvan, Salyan) in the later 18th century; annexed by Russia in the 1800s.
Fell under Russian control in 1806 and was formally annexed; its cession by Iran was confirmed by the Treaty of Gulistan (1813) and it was abolished as a khanate (converted to a province c.1810).
