Middle Bronze Age Syrian city-state with one of the largest royal palaces of its era, whose intact royal tomb has illuminated Bronze Age funerary customs.
Destroyed c. 1340 BCE when the Mitannian king Tushratta burned the royal palace in retaliation against Hittite expansion in Syria; Suppiluliuma I subsequently conquered the city during his Syrian campaigns, and the site was not re-occupied until the late 10th century BCE.
