A Puritan chartered colony of the Providence Island Company in the western Caribbean off the Mosquito Coast, intended as a godly agricultural settlement but functioning chiefly as a privateering base against Spanish shipping.
Captured by combined Spanish and Portuguese forces in 1641 after two earlier failed attempts; the English settlers were removed and the island (renamed Santa Catalina) held as a Spanish garrison until 1666. Today part of Colombia's San Andrés, Providencia y Santa Catalina archipelago.
