Principality of Transylvania

1570 – 1711
PrincipalityEurope

Semi-independent Ottoman vassal state ruled by Hungarian Calvinist princes; a rare haven of religious tolerance in 16th-17th century Europe.

The semi-independent Ottoman-vassal Principality of Transylvania (1570–1711) ended with the Peace of Szatmár on 30 April 1711, which concluded Ferenc II Rákóczi's War of Independence and incorporated Transylvania into the Habsburg Monarchy under direct imperial administration, replacing the elected princes with Habsburg gubernatorial governors.
