An early medieval Serbian principality in the western Balkans ruled by the Vlastimirović dynasty. Its first ruler known by name, Višeslav, began his reign around 780; the principality consolidated Serb tribes against Bulgar expansion to the east and later became a key pawn between Byzantium and Bulgaria.
Annexed by Bulgaria's Simeon I in 924 and briefly restored under Časlav in 933; finally annexed by the Byzantine Empire c.969-971 and administered as the Catepanate of Ras.
