Successor principality of Kievan Rus' on the middle Oka, becoming independent from Chernigov in 1129 under Yaroslav Sviatoslavich after his ouster; maintained formal independence longer than any other Rus' principality despite growing Muscovite pressure through the 15th century.

Absorbed into the Grand Duchy of Moscow in 1521, after Grand Prince Vasili III captured the last Grand Prince of Ryazan, Ivan V, in 1520.
