Southern Rus' principality on the Trubizh river, its city dated by the Primary Chronicle to 992; developed as a semi-independent domain after the inheritance divisions among the sons of Yaroslav the Wise, traditionally ranked the 'third throne' of Rus' after Kiev and Chernigov.
Conquered and devastated by the Mongols in March 1239; the city was abandoned and lay uninhabited until the 15th century, and the principality's political status became increasingly ambiguous thereafter, formally ending by 1323.
