A small, heavily forested Calvinist state wedged between the Weser and the Teutoburg Forest — the ground where Arminius destroyed Varus's legions. Its dynasty ran unbroken from the twelfth-century lords of Lippe to the prince who abdicated in 1918, and its 1895-1905 succession dispute became a famous German constitutional-law case.
Joined the North German Confederation in 1866 and the German Empire in 1871; the last prince abdicated in November 1918 and Lippe continued as a Free State until it was merged into North Rhine-Westphalia in 1947.
