Autonomous Bulgarian principality under nominal Ottoman suzerainty, created by the Congress of Berlin (1878) after the Russo-Turkish War; united with Eastern Rumelia in 1885, ruled by Alexander of Battenberg then Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.

Ferdinand declared full independence and assumed the title of Tsar on 5 October 1908, becoming the Tsardom (Kingdom) of Bulgaria.
