Principality of Albania (Thopia)

1359 – 1415
PrincipalityEurope

The Thopia dynasty's principality in central Albania between the Mat and Shkumbin: Karl Thopia emerged in 1359 after killing the Despot of Epirus at the Battle of Achelous, took Durres from the Angevins in March 1368, and made his house the strongest force in Albania until the Ottomans arrived.

Durres passed to Venice on Gjergj Thopia's death in 1392; the reduced principality held on at Kruje until 1415, when the Ottomans took it into the Sanjak of Albania.
