The Black Sea coastal principality ruled by the Shervashidze (Chachba) house, which broke away as the unified Georgian kingdom dissolved; long an Ottoman tributary, it passed to Russian protection in 1810 and was abolished in 1864.

Absorbed into the Russian Empire in 1864 at the close of the Caucasian War, when its autonomous princely administration under the Shervashidze was abolished.
