TheocracyEurope

Boniface's burial church became a state: from 1220 its abbots ruled as princes of the Empire and Arch-Chancellors of the Empress, and from 1752 as prince-bishops.

Dissolved by the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss (1802/1803) and given to William Frederick of Orange-Nassau as Nassau-Orange-Fulda; taken by France in 1806, the Grand Duchy of Frankfurt in 1810, and Hesse-Kassel in 1815.
