Piscataway Confederacy

1608 – present
ConfederationNorth America

Algonquian paramount chiefdom of the Potomac's western/Maryland shore, ruled by a tayac from the capital village of Moyaone; met by John Smith in 1608 and later a tributary ally of the Maryland colony after 1634.

Broken by 17th-century epidemics, warfare, and colonial land pressure; descendant communities reorganized and received Maryland state recognition in 2012 (Piscataway Indian Nation and Piscataway Conoy Tribe), though neither holds federal recognition.
