Phoenician colony that grew into a maritime empire dominating the western Mediterranean until Rome destroyed it.

Destroyed by Rome in 146 BC at the end of the Third Punic War: the city was razed over six days, its 50,000 surviving inhabitants enslaved, and its territory became the Roman province of Africa with Utica as capital.
