Pemon (Arekuna-Taurepan)

1750 – present
Native nationSouth America

Savanna and tepui people of the Gran Sabana, the Cariban Pemon dwelling in the shadow of the great table-mountains they hold to be the home of the mawari spirits.

Reaching the Gran Sabana in recent centuries and met by Westerners only in the 1700s, the Pemon were drawn into mission and mining frontiers; their Arekuna, Kamarakoto and Taurepan communities — around 30,000 — still hold the Caroní valleys of Bolívar and the Brazil-Guyana borders.
