Pate Sultanate

Swahili city-state of the Lamu archipelago, a center of trade and Swahili literature.

Gradually subjugated during the 19th century: Lamu defeated Pate at the Battle of Shela (1812), Siyu and other towns came under Zanzibar suzerainty, and the sultanate's independence was fully extinguished by c. 1895 when it passed under the British East Africa Protectorate.
