The Arsacid Parthian Empire was the dominant Iranian power for nearly five centuries, blocking Roman eastward expansion and controlling the Silk Road trade routes between Rome and China.

Overthrown by the Sasanian dynasty under Ardashir I in 224 CE, ending when the last Arsacid king Artabanus IV was defeated and killed at the Battle of Hormozdgan.
