Yoruba cavalry empire that dominated the western Niger forest and savanna.

The Oyo Empire collapsed between 1817 and 1836 following a series of Fulani jihad incursions, internal revolts, and the burning of its capital Oyo-Ile in 1835 and its subsequent abandonment c. 1836; a reduced successor state (New Oyo) was established further south and survived into the British colonial era, being incorporated into the British Protectorate of Yorubaland by Governor Carter's treaty of 3 February 1893.
