Busaidi Omani maritime empire that controlled the Swahili coast before splitting off Zanzibar.

Divided in 1856 upon the death of Sultan Said bin Sultan: the empire was split by British mediation (formalized by the Canning Award, 1861) into the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman (ruled by Thuwaini bin Said) and the independent Sultanate of Zanzibar (ruled by Majid bin Said), ending the unified Omani maritime empire.
