The Edo-speaking kingdom of Igodomigodo, ruled by a line of Ogiso ('king of the sky'), was the pre-Oba precursor state to the later Kingdom of Benin — the earliest known centralized monarchy in the Benin/Edo region, with a semi-legendary 31-ruler king list beginning with Ogiso Igodo.
The Ogiso monarchy collapsed amid succession disputes around the early 12th century; an interregnum followed before the Edo invited an Ife prince (founding the Oba dynasty, traditionally c. 1180-1200) to found the historical Kingdom of Benin — a DISTINCT, later polity not to be conflated with this record.
