Neustria

511 – 751
KingdomEurope

Western, more Romanized division of the Merovingian Frankish realm, between the Loire and the Silva Carbonaria, with major centres at Paris, Orléans, Tours and Soissons — the counterpart to Austrasia in the east.

Repeatedly contested with Austrasia for control of the whole Frankish kingdom; lost that contest decisively at the Battle of Tertry (687), after which Austrasian/Pippinid mayors of the palace dominated a nominally reunited Francia until the Carolingian takeover of 751 (the term later persisted for a smaller Carolingian-era sub-region).
