The Chaldean dynasty that rebuilt Babylon into the greatest city of its age; Nebuchadnezzar II sacked Jerusalem (586 BC), deported the Jewish population, and constructed the Hanging Gardens before Cyrus the Great ended the dynasty.

Conquered by the Achaemenid Persian king Cyrus the Great in 539 BCE; after the Battle of Opis his forces took Babylon and the empire became a Persian satrapy.
