Samoyedic reindeer herders of the Arctic tundra, known to outsiders as Samoyeds or Yuraks, whose migratory cycle runs between the Arctic coast and the northern forest edge from the Kanin Peninsula to the Yenisei.
Not an ending: Russian forts and the yasak (fur tribute) brought the Nenets under tsarist authority by the early 17th century, but Nenets clans went on raiding tribute caravans and strongholds (Pustozersk was attacked six times in a century, the last in 1746), resisted Soviet collectivization by arms, and remain today the most numerous Samoyedic people — 49,646 in the 2021 Russian census, still herding reindeer on Yamal.
