A confederation of Minangkabau settler chiefdoms (Sungai Ujong, Rembau, Johol, Jelebu, Naning and others) that in 1773 imported Raja Melewar from Pagaruyung in Sumatra as their first Yang di-Pertuan Besar, uniting the 'nine states' as a polity distinct from Johor. It preserved Minangkabau matrilineal adat perpatih custom.
Non-terminal: British protectorate/Federated Malay State from the 1870s-1895, and since 1957 a constituent monarchy of Malaysia.
Covers Minangkabau settlement and the 1773 Pagaruyung-linked confederation (Open Library /works/OL3901035W).
