Naristi (Varisci)

98 – 180
CultureEurope

Germanic people (variously Varisci, Varisti, Naristi, Narisci in the sources) reported by Tacitus (c. AD 98) as living just north of the Roman Danube frontier, east of the Hermunduri and west of the Marcomanni and Quadi — likely near present-day Linz, Austria. Associated by Roman authors with the Suebian peoples who moved into the Danube region under Marcomanni leadership.

Participated in the Marcomannic Wars under Marcus Aurelius; their chief was killed by the Roman general Marcus Valerius Maximianus. Subsequent history is not well recorded in surviving sources.
