Naranjo (ancient Sa'aal, emblem glyph Wak Kab'nal) was a Classic Maya city-state in the Petén Basin of Guatemala, about 50 km east of Tikal. Installed as a Calakmul client kingdom in AD 546, it fought a long running war with Tikal and Caracol for regional dominance throughout the 6th-8th centuries.
Repeatedly conquered and reinstated by Calakmul and Tikal (attacked by Caracol in 626, retaken by Calakmul in 631, refounded by the Calakmul princess Lady Six Sky in 682, defeated and its king likely sacrificed by Tikal in 744), Naranjo's dynasty declined amid the Terminal Classic collapse and a severe drought around 810 AD, with the site finally abandoned by the mid-10th century.
