Algonquian paramount chiefdom of the Chesapeake's Eastern Shore, first mapped by John Smith in 1608, ruling the Nanticoke River towns and tributaries including the Choptank.
Reduced by disease and land loss; many merged into the Delaware/Lenape and were formally adopted into the Haudenosaunee Confederacy in the 18th century. Descendants organized as the Nanticoke Indian Association (1881) and the Nanticoke Indian Tribe of Delaware, Delaware state-recognized since 1881 (formal governing-body recognition 2016); not federally recognized.
