The Akkadian name for a region inhabited by a confederation or league of tribal principalities in the Armenian Highlands, between modern Diyarbakir and Lake Van and west of Lake Urmia; first securely attested in Assyrian records under Tukulti-Ninurta I (r. 1243-1207 BC) and a rival power to both Assyria and Hatti before the Bronze Age collapse.
Gradually absorbed into Assyria and the rising kingdom of Urartu (whose early kings styled themselves rulers of 'Nairi') by the 8th century BC.
