Organized cattle-herding Neolithic communities around the Nabta Playa basin in Egypt's Nubian Desert, known for planned villages, deep wells, sacrificial cattle burials, and megalithic astronomical alignments.
Continued as a seasonal ceremonial and pastoral center through the Holocene wet phase; regional aridification through the later Holocene eventually ended settlement of the playa, with its cattle-cult traditions proposed (not certain) as an antecedent to Egypt's Hathor cult.
Primary excavation report and synthesis by the site's principal investigators, covering the Nabta Playa/Bir Kiseiba Neolithic sequence.
