Moundville

1100 – 1450
ChiefdomNorth America

A palisaded ceremonial city of some thirty platform mounds ringing a plaza on the Black Warrior River — one of the largest Mississippian centres in the Deep South.

After ~1350 commoners drifted away and Moundville became a sparsely-peopled necropolis; by 1450 it was largely emptied as people dispersed up the valley.
