Mesa Verde (Ancestral Puebloan)

750 – 1300
Native nationNorth America

The cliff-dwelling Puebloans of the Four Corners mesas, who in their final century withdrew from the mesa tops into great sandstone alcoves and built Cliff Palace and Spruce Tree House into the canyon walls.

A crushing late-13th-century drought and resource crisis drove a total depopulation of the region by ~1300; the people migrated south and east to the Rio Grande and Hopi mesas, where their descendants live today.
