The 'Five Principalities' (khamsa) — a cluster of autonomous Armenian melikdoms in the mountains of Karabakh (Gulistan, Jraberd, Khachen, Varanda, Dizak) that preserved a measure of Armenian self-rule under Safavid and then khanate/Russian overlordship, until abolished by Russia in 1822.
The Karabakh khans (Panah and Ebrahim) fought and displaced several meliks in the 18th century; the surviving feudal entities were abolished by the Russian Empire in 1822 together with the Karabakh Khanate.
