Maurya Empire

The first empire to unify most of the Indian subcontinent, the Maurya Empire reached its zenith under Ashoka, whose edicts championing dharma and non-violence became one of the earliest statements of ethical governance.

Disintegrated in 185 BCE when the last Mauryan emperor, Brihadratha, was assassinated by his general Pushyamitra Shunga, who founded the Shunga Empire.
