Roman province of central-western North Africa created after the annexation of Mauretania.
Mauretania Caesariensis was ceded to the Vandals by treaty in 435 AD, partially recovered by Byzantium after 534, but its interior remained under Berber tribal control; the province as a Roman administrative unit ended definitively with the Arab conquest of the Maghreb in the late 7th century.
