The dominant Islamic Javanese sultanate that contested Dutch VOC control of Java until it was fragmented by the Dutch into two successor states in 1755.

Partitioned under the Treaty of Giyanti on 13 February 1755, brokered by the Dutch East India Company (VOC), dividing the sultanate between the Surakarta Sunanate in the east and the newly created Yogyakarta Sultanate in the west.
