PrincipalityEurope

Frontier march of the Holy Roman Empire along the Danube, between the river Enns and the Vienna Woods, granted to the Babenberg family in 976. Stemmed from older eastern-Bavarian border defenses against the Avars; the direct territorial and dynastic ancestor of the Duchy (later Archduchy) of Austria.

Elevated to a duchy in 1156 by the Privilegium Minus, ending the margraviate and founding the Duchy of Austria under continued Babenberg rule.
