A Meitei kingdom in the Imphal valley on the India-Burma frontier, ruled by the Ningthouja dynasty. It reached its zenith under Pamheiba (Garib Niwaz, r. 1709-48), who adopted Hinduism, renamed the realm Manipur, and even raided the Burmese capital Ava; the kingdom was then devastated by Burma in the 'Seven Years Devastation' (1819-26). It became a British protectorate after 1826 and a princely state in 1891, merging with India in 1949.
