Conquered by the Ottoman Empire in the Ottoman–Mamluk War: Sultan al-Ashraf Qansuh al-Ghawri died at the Battle of Marj Dabiq on 24 August 1516; his successor Tuman Bay II, the last Mamluk sultan, was defeated near Giza on 2 April 1517 and executed by hanging at Bab Zuwayla on 13 April 1517, completing the Ottoman conquest of Egypt.
