Mandinka gold-and-salt empire of Sundiata and Mansa Musa, the largest medieval West African state.
Declined from the late 14th century as Songhai seized its eastern provinces; Mansa Mahmud IV's failed attempt on Jenne in 1599 was the rump state's last bid for the Niger delta, and on his death c. 1610 Manden was partitioned among his three sons, ending the empire. (A Bamana army sacked Niani in 1670.)
