Telugu (Balija) dynasty, originally Vijayanagara viceroys, who ruled most of the southern Tamil country from Madurai; noted patrons of temple building and administration under kings such as Tirumala Nayaka and the regent-queen Mangammal.
Collapsed in 1736 amid a succession crisis under the regent-queen Meenakshi; the territory passed to Chanda Sahib and thence into the orbit of the Carnatic nawabate and the Company.
